Permaculture arose in the 1970s as an answer to the principal ethical dilemma of the last century—how to give cultures a chance to be permanent despite the 20th century’s new-found nuclear, fossil fuel, and resource waste potential to extinct us. 20% of the world’s peoples are consuming 80% of the resources or thereabouts, emitting about the same percentage of greenhouse gases.
