First Anniversary of First Church Solar Installation Operation
On February 19, 2024, the 162 panel solar installation was activated and began generating solar power to meet a portion of the electricity needs of our church. In its first year of operation the display generated 68,629 kilowatt hours of electricity or 27% of our total usage. The project is making a significant contribution to our commitment to be a green congregation. The solar power generated avoided emission of 41 tons of carbon dioxide that would have been released to the atmosphere if fossil fuel had been burned. Our solar power generated was equivalent to offsetting 6058 gallons of gasoline consumed or 2860 electric cars being charged. The solar power saved our church $10,964 by reducing our purchase of electricity during the year. While making a significant contribution of reducing our carbon footprint, our total electricity usage during the past year increased by 3%. We are studying ways to reduce our power usage to further reduce our carbon footprint and energy costs.

Join us for the 4th Annual Vegan Chili Cook-Off — a flavorful celebration hosted by the First UU Climate Action Team and the UU Animal Ministry of Houston!
Whether you’re a seasoned plant-based pro or a kitchen creative looking to try something new, bring your best vegan chili and compete for fabulous prizes, community bragging rights, and the honor of this year’s winning recipe.
All chili entries must be 100% plant-based — no meat, dairy, eggs, or animal-derived ingredients — keeping the spirit of compassion, sustainability, and delicious innovation at the heart of the event.
Not cooking chili? You’re still an essential part of the feast! This is a potluck-style gathering, and we welcome sides, breads, cornbread, and desserts to round out the table and make the meal complete.
All attendees are invited to sample, enjoy, vote, and help crown our chili champion!
Come share community, artistry, and good food — one simmering bowl at a time.
