First Anniversary of First Church Solar Installation Operation

On February 19, 2024, the 162 panel solar installation was activated and began generating solar power to meet a portion of the electricity needs of our church. In its first year of operation the display generated 68,629 kilowatt hours of electricity or 27% of our total usage. The project is making a significant contribution to our commitment to be a green congregation. The solar power generated avoided emission of 41 tons of carbon dioxide that would have been released to the atmosphere if fossil fuel had been burned. Our solar power generated was equivalent to offsetting 6058 gallons of gasoline consumed or 2860 electric cars being charged. The solar power saved our church $10,964 by reducing our purchase of electricity during the year. While making a significant contribution of reducing our carbon footprint, our total electricity usage during the past year increased by 3%. We are studying ways to reduce our power usage to further reduce our carbon footprint and energy costs.

Climate Action Team joined the People vs. Fossil Fuels Coalition    Please be a good ancestor and sign their action alert letter. Eating less meat will help as much as solar says Project Drawdown.

Join us on Saturday, April 25 at 6:30 PM at First Unitarian Universalist Church for an evening of delicious food and meaningful connection. We’ll be sharing plant-based dishes from around the world, highlighting the diversity, creativity, and sustainability of compassionate cuisine.

We’re also honored to welcome Andy Escobar, Campaign Manager for the Coalition for Environment, Equity and Resilience, who will speak about resilience hubs—community-centered spaces designed to support neighborhoods during climate emergencies and strengthen local connections year-round.

This event is proudly sponsored by the First UU Climate Action Team and is open to all.

Come for the food, stay for the conversation, and leave inspired to build a more resilient and compassionate world together!
