News: August 2, 2024

Dear Friends and Members,
The month of August always feels like a time of preparation. Summer hasn’t quite drawn to close, that will happen in September, but its end is in sight. Here at First Unitarian Universalist, we are getting ready to launch the program year on August 11th with our annual Ingathering and Water Communion. For those that haven’t been in the past, it is a special service where we acknowledge that we are coming together after the lull of the summer. We share waters that are significant to us to honor the ways in which coming together in community is always a mingling of our gifts. The following Sunday, August 18th, we return to full religious education programs for children and youth and offer them at both 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. At that should suggest, the rest of the month is going to be full of rich offerings that we hope you will find inspiring.
Rev. Cooper will be preaching a sermon this Sunday with a sermon titled “Power.” He will be reflecting on his experiences at an Industrial Areas Foundation training and losing power during Beryl. Then, on the 18th, I will be offering a sermon titled “Through Eyes that Have Cried.” I will be reflecting on the trip to the border I will be taking with First Unitarian Universalist members August 11th to 14th. There’s still room and scholarship money available. Please contact the office if you would like to attend.
Over the course of the year there will be a pivotal national election, the adoption of a congregational strategic plan, and a vote to elect a settled minister. Throughout the series, questions about how the climate crisis, the global rise of right-wing populism and white supremacy, and escalating inequality will shape the coming years will form a backdrop. As we grapple with them, we will aspire to deepen the spiritual life of our community, and the spiritual lives of our members and friends, by offering a program devoted to exploring three aspects of the future--societal, personal, and planetary--from a variety of religious perspectives. And so, on the 25th, we will start our yearlong cycle “Future Visions, Future Selves.”
I hope that you will join us for this and all of the other wonderful things at First Unitarian Universalist. See you soon!
love,
Colin
