Position on Gun Violence
Resolution Passed by
the Board of Directors of First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston
on February 15, 2023
Whereas the first principle of the Unitarian Universalist Association is respect for the inherent worth and dignity of every person,
And whereas, religious communities throughout the United States have religious beliefs that are similar to this principle,
And whereas, the gun violence epidemic takes more than 40,000 American lives in an average year (almost 4,000 in Texas alone),
And whereas, the NRA and other gun lobby extremists have chosen gun sales over commonsense gun laws that have been proven to save lives.
And whereas, the National Rifle Association is holding its annual convention April 14 to April 16 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Therefore, be it resolved that the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston calls for a day of mourning for the victims of gun violence to coincide with the NRA's convention,
Therefore, be it further resolved that the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston will hold a worship service to honor the memories of those who have died from gun violence on Saturday, April 15, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and invite family members and friends of the slain, religious leaders, elected officials, gun violence prevention advocates, and all people of good heart to join us,
And therefore, be it finally resolved that the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston calls upon religious communities across the United States to join with us in holding similar services, honoring those who have died by gun violence, and calling upon political leaders to pass meaningful gun sense legislation.
