Dear Friends and Members,

Dear Friends and Members:

This Sunday marks the formal beginning of our program year. That means it is our annual Water Communion. If you haven’t been before, the Water Communion is a special multigenerational service meant to symbolize the reunification of the community after our dispersal for activities. Everyone is encouraged to bring water that represents something important to them. Alongside hymns, a short homily, and beautiful music, there will be an opportunity to share about the meaning of the water during the service.

After this Sunday, we will be resuming a regular religious education program for children and youth and ramping up our offerings for adult programs. We have a lot of wonderful stuff planned to help you deepen your spirituality and sense of connection to the congregation.

I am particularly excited about a year-long program that Rev. Cooper and I have designed called Lives of the Spirit. Each month we will be focusing on the life and teaching of one of the twentieth century’s great spiritual activists or religious leaders. We’ll begin in September with Abraham Joshua Heschel. A Jewish rabbi and social justice activist, he worked closely with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and believed that awe and wonder lie at the root of religion and spirituality.

In October, we will turn to the Texas-born Chicana feminist, scholar, spiritual activist Gloria Anzaldúa. And then, month-after-after, we will consider how Christian, Hindus, humanists, Unitarian Universalists, and others have lived spirit filled lives devoted to service and their own unique sense of the holy.

We are encouraging you to fully engage in this program by not just attending, or watching, the Sunday services but by engaging in covenant groups that will be meeting once a month for reflection and fellowship. We’re actively recruiting leaders for these small groups. Please contact Rev. Cooper if you would like to be serve the congregation in this way. And if you’re interested in participating in one of the covenant groups please let us know by signing-up here.

I hope that you’ll take this opportunity to deepen your own spirituality as well as your engagement with First Unitarian Universalist. I am really excited about Lives of the Spirit and the opportunities it is going to present. Looking forward to seeing many of you soon!

love,

Colin
