Dear Members and Friends,

Somehow, the summer is both winding down and heating up. As I write this, I check the weather on my phone, and it reports it is 102 degrees outside.

I can’t tell you how excited I am for the upcoming (cooler) year. I just began another Newcomer’s Covenant Group, and I’ll be rolling out other groups as part of our multi-faceted Lives of the Spirit program. There’s a lot going on at your church!

Sunday will be our Summer Intergenerational Service, “Rest as Resistance”, so make plans to be here. Carol has planned some interesting and inspiring words and activities for all of us, no matter our age. The following week, a special guest preacher from Austin, Carrie Holley-Hurt, will join us in the pulpit to talk about being “Unapologetically UU!” I’ll be in the pulpit on August 20th, then we’ll officially begin the church year on August 27 with our Ingathering and Water Celebration. For the younger students, we’ll also do the Blessing of the Backpacks and Feast of All Good Children that day.

While you have your calendars out, we will be holding a special service to celebrate my becoming your Associate Minister on Sunday, October 15, at 5:00 pm. I’m excited to announce that the Rev. Lucy Bunch, my mentor from my parish internship in Sacramento, will be here to preach. There will be a reception afterwards.

Just a friendly word of caution, Covid-19 hospitalizations are rising for the first time since the beginning of 2023. There seems to be a resurgence. Please monitor your health, and wear your mask when you think it’s prudent.

Please stay cool, and I hope to see you Sunday!

Rev. D. Scott Cooper
Associate Minister
First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston

Rev. Scott will join Carol Burrus on the chancel this Sunday for the Intergenerational Service. He’ll be in Dallas the next weekend to marry his stepson Harrison and fiancé Cailey. He returns to the chancel on August 20 to preach, and joins Dr. Bossen for Ingathering on August 27.
