Montrose Grace Place

On Thursday, May 30, we will again be hosting the evening meal to the youth at Montrose Grace Place. Please let Rev. Scott know if you’d like to help cook or serve with the team from our church.

Annual Easter Parade

We collected non-perishable food for our annual “Feed the Community” Food Drive and Easter Parade on and March 31.

Thank you to all that contributed!

English as a Second Language Classes at Emerson UU Church

Volunteer Opportunities

Metropolitan Houston is estimated to be one-quarter migrants. The Emerson English as a Second Language (ESL) classes have served over 1000 non-native English speakers since 2015. Throughout the years, there have been students from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe, speaking languages from Arabic to Ukrainian.

The classes are held each Tuesday and Thursday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Emerson UU Church, 1900 Bering Drive. Four levels of English are offered: Basic, for those with little or no English, and levels 1, 2, and 3. It is hoped a level 4 class can be added soon. The program is free, and does not require documentation.

All teachers and teaching assistants are volunteers, and teach one night a week. More volunteers are always needed to help with this important program. Please consider volunteering as a teaching assistant; this would give you the experience and opportunity to see if you would like to become a teacher. To express interest in volunteering, or if you have any questions, contact:

Houston Food Bank Kid’s Café
Volunteer Opportunities

The Houston Food Bank Kid’s Café is a summer program in third ward apartment complexes. Our church was instrumental in initiating and coordinating this program when we heard the state did not apply for millions of dollars to pay for this effort. We will be supplying lunches for kids in low-income areas who would otherwise go hungry because they will not have the usual summer food programs.

We are signing up teams of volunteers to work the Kid’s Café. The Houston Food Bank will deliver meals to designated apartment complexes between June 10 and August 8. Volunteers are needed between noon and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. (Volunteers are not signing up to work Monday through Friday all summer. We are hoping to recruit several teams to work one week per month.)

Teams are two or three volunteers, who must be at least 18 years old. Volunteers will work with team leaders to guide them in the set-up, serving, and breakdown in one of the apartment complexes each day.

If you are interested in volunteering for this important program, or have questions, please contact communityprojectsteam@firstuu.org.
