News: September 6, 2024
I am back in town – and at church - after spending time in Dallas with Conrad and in Kentucky with my sister. There’s a lot going on here at church, and a lot for me to catch up on.
We plan to train and kick off our Pastoral Associate Team at the Leadership Forum on September 21. I described the Team in more detail in my last newsletter column on August 9. If you are interested, please contact me.
I also described the Newcomer Covenant Group, which began only yesterday. So if you’d like to join, let me know.
I’m excited because I preach on Sunday. I decided to plug into the practice of describing Unitarian Universalism at the end of the summer or beginning of the new church year. There are often quite a few new folks (please welcome them!) who found us over the summer and they are often eager to learn more about this faith community. Long-time members may consider it continuing ed!
We have a special treat on Sunday. The children have been memorizing a poem, and they will share it with us during the Time for All Ages. It will be in the Order of Service, so you can recite it with them, or you can even memorize it as they did. Carol reminds us that “Memorizing poems is a kind of spiritual practice that focuses the mind, helps us understand the meaning of poems and to know them more deeply.”
“Do Not Be Dismayed” by L. R. Knost
Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world.
All things break. And all things can be mended.
Not with time, as they say, but with intention.
So go. Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally.
The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you.
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday.
With much love and appreciation,
Rev. D. Scott Cooper
Associate Minister
First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston
