7:00 pm: Choir Rehearsal7:00 pm: Choir Rehearsal – Our no-audition volunteer First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston Choir usually sings during services two Sundays a month. We are open to having our gifted singers and instrumentalists present special music collaboratively and as soloists during worship services throughout the year. Each year the music department presents special music programs for All Soul’s Day and another during the spring. Choir Rehearsals (subject to change): Thursdays 7:00 – 8:30pm in the Sanctuary from August through October. After October, rehearsals will move to 10:40 - 11:10 AM on First and Third Sundays. 11:30 am: Sunday Service11:30 am: Sunday Service – In-Person & Livestreaming First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston 1:00 pm: The Negro Spiritual as Solace & Social Justice: A Seminar and Workshop1:00 pm: The Negro Spiritual as Solace & Social Justice: A Seminar and Workshop – Commonly, American Negro Spirituals are thought of as beautiful songs wherein the enslaved sang about the pain of their social conditions and assuaged their sorrows. In fact, this description is only partially true. Their are approximately 6000 known songs from this body of repertoire and many of them, through coded, and sometimes straightforward texts, express the enslaved person’s understanding of the unfairness of his plight and his judgement of the slaveholders. Through curated examples, audience participation, and demonstration, Dr. Jason Oby will explain how, with coded messaging and profound poetic poetry, the enslaved fought for social justice. We invite you to join us here at First Church for this transformative music-focused workshop after the second service on Sunday, August 14th.
