Our Whole Lives
7th-9th Sexuality Education Course
Starting in January!
First UU Church of Houston and our denomination believe that sexuality is an important part of being human. In support of all children and youth’s growth, a comprehensive, age-appropriate, education course for children and youth has been offered since the 80s and 90s respectively, taking into account the child and youth’s developmental level and the parents’ point in life.
The 7th-9th grade course is the most comprehensive with 25 sessions to be offered at the Museum District in January 2020. Over eleven (11) Sunday afternoons (from January to April), we will schedule each lesson based on the families’ best availability, probably at 12:30 or 1:30 pm. As this course is comprehensive, some judgement, self-reflection and maturity is required for youth to take full advantage of and benefit from the lessons. All OWL lessons are given by trained, experienced, trusted adults in our church.
A Parent Orientation will also be scheduled to provide more specific information, including an opportunity to look at the curriculum. (Feel free to visit the Unitarian Universalist Association’s website on OWL: http://www.uua.org/re/owl).
We ask parents planning for their youth to attend, to make a serious commitment and have their youth attend all sessions. We do not want any youth to miss out.
OWL sessions are open to the community beyond our church. If you are not a member of First UU
Church, we ask you to meet separately with our Director of Religious Education and one of our facilitators to discuss the course prior to the Parent Orientation.
To help us cover the cost of training, curriculum and materials, there will be a fee of $75 for First UU Church Members and $100 for Non-Members. Please note that partial or full scholarships are available. Request scholarship information at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you believe your youth may not be yet ready for these lessons, please note OWL lessons will be offered again at either First UU Church of Houston or Emerson UU Church.
