Congregational Covenant

Adopted by the Congregation on April 15, 2007

In our search for truth and meaning, and as members of the community of First Unitarian Universalist Church of Houston, we make the following commitment to one another:

We work to build community.

• We treat one another in a friendly, open, and welcoming manner.

• We give generously of ourselves and our resources and we inspire others to do the same.

• We participate in the life of the community.

• We care for one another.

• We give and seek constructive feedback in our relationships with one another.

 We work toward open, honest, effective and respectful communication.

• We treat others with respect, honesty, and good faith.

• We nurture person-to-person and group-to-group relationships.

• We speak for ourselves alone.

• We accept that conflict will occur.

• We develop processes that recognize conflict and disagreements when or before they arise.

• We accept responsibility to work constructively to resolve differences and we seek help when unable to do so.

• We listen actively and we attempt to understand the perspective of the other even while in disagreement with that viewpoint.

• We stay in the conversation, even when difficulties arise.

We work to make effective decisions as a community.

• We work toward consensus and we practice a democratic process for decision-making.

• We discuss issues out in the open and with respect.
