1 Dec – High Speed Trains – Europe, India and China Have Them and Love Them, Why Can’t We?
Presented by Irv Smith
China has nearly 20,000 miles of High-Speed Rail (HSR). Japan’s bullet trains run at 200 mph. Europe’s HSR started in the 1960’s with France’s TGV’s. 8 Dec – St Nicolas St. Nicholas, AKA Santa Claus”

The St Nick legends are fascinating. St. Nicholas Day, feast day (December 6) of St. Nicholas, the 4th-century bishop of Myra. 15 Dec – Entropy or why everything seems to go downhill
Presented by Ed Hrkle
Why do things naturally get messy, disorganized, older, or simply die? It’s easy to break an egg or a vase but it’s almost impossible to get them back the way they were. Although the concept of “entropy” can help us understand these processes, without the benefit of a course in thermodynamics, we need help to show us the way so we can at least get some control if not appreciation of the “entropy” in our lives.

22 Dec – Acknowledging the Land
Presented by Betty Johnson
A Land Acknowledgement is a formal statement that recognizes and respects Indigenous Peoples as traditional stewards of this land, honoring their enduring relationship to the land. In preparation for the dedication of the Thoreau campus, we researched the traditional stewards of our land and the chain of custody that brought it to us. When we learn about the history of the land, we invite and honor truth, including truth that may be difficult to hear. What then are we called to do on the land?

29 Dec – Decade in Review
Hosted by Lindi Kohn
As 2019 comes to a close we say goodbye to another decade. Looking back, what changed in the last 10 years? Food, clothing, entertainment, how we communicate, music, the space race, how we travel, women’s or LGBTQ rights – all have changed. What’s impacted you? Why? If you have a gem from the distant past, photos or some interesting statistics for comparison, please bring to share! We will keep this fun and light – even though some changes are hard to bear.
