22 March – Origin of Hinduism

Presented by Ron Masters

In honor of the Hindu celebration of Holi this month, we’ll hear a lecture from Prof. Mark Muesse on the origins of Hinduism. Before 1500BCE, an indigenous Indus Valley civilization had been focused on agriculture, goddess worship, and fertility. Aryan nomads from Central Asia introduced rituals that gave meaning to everything from the creation of the universe to the death of an individual, and ensured the proper functioning of the world. As urbanization increased and some orders of society became wealthier, a counter-cultural movement of mystics and ascetics began to question priestly authority. By 800BCE, a concern with the fundamental meaning of life marks the rise of classical Hinduism and coincides with the Axial Age’s beginnings in India.
