What is Bastille Day?

Presented by Robert Salmi

During the reign of Louis XVI, conditions such as a considerable financial deficit, unpopular taxation schemes, years of poor harvests, and the Age of Enlightenment ideals led to the French Revolution.  A newly created National Assembly voted a constitutional monarchy, and adopted a “Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen“.  An emblematic event of the Revolution is the commoners’ storming of the prison-fortress La Bastille on July 14th 1789, celebrated to this day as Bastille Day.
