Mar 3 – – Gerrymandering: Politicians Choosing You
Presented by Lydia Ozuna
Our guest speaker will define gerrymandering, how it affects voters, its consequences, and how citizens can get involved to end gerrymandering in Texas. Lydia Ozuna became an activist following the 2016 election. She is leader of Texans Against Gerrymandering, which is a part of Fair Maps Texas Coalition. She brings to those roles a distinguished career in education leadership. She taught for 23 years and has earned an MA in Education Leadership and a second MA in Human Resource Management with a specialization in Organizational Change and Development. She and her husband have lived in Angola, Scotland, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea.
Mar 10 – Autonomous Cars and Trucks
Presented by Tony Veneruso
While the autonomous car revolution is happening before our eyes and already in small steps in our cars, huge investments are being made to take over commercial trucking long before anyone has to think about getting into a robo-Uber. Several companies are road-testing self-driving trucks in the controlled environments of shipping ports and large industrial sites (which already have self-driving forklifts!). What about the displaced truck drivers? Also, what about collisions that are bound to happen as humans and robot drivers share highways. Who pays when a robo-car or truck kills? How radically will “autonomous” transform our transportation system, and by extension, our economy and society?
Mar 17 – The Sky Scenario. Ron Masters
The Sky scenario outlines what Shell-oil believes to be a technologically, industrially, and economically possible route forward, consistent with limiting the global average temperature rise to well below 2°C from pre-industrial levels. It reveals the potential for an energy system to emerge that brings modern energy to all in the world, without delivering a climate legacy that society cannot readily adapt to.
