How First Church is Making a Difference in the World

 

Vision:

Firmly grounded in our Unitarian Universalist principles, we join together on the path of spiritual and intellectual growth to promote and celebrate community, diversity, and social justice for a healthier and more equitable world.

 

Mission (Global End Statement):

A spiritual community for all: advancing justice and embracing diversity with love and acceptance.

1.1 Promote Love and Acceptance

1.1.1 First Church is known as a place where people can bring their whole selves to connect with others with love across differences.

1.1.2 Members, friends and their families feel welcomed here.

1.1.3 We are known throughout the greater Houston area for bringing the principles of Unitarian Universalism, especially the values of love and acceptance, into the public square.

1.2 Extend Unitarian Universalism

1.2.1 An increasing number of people find and stay at First Church to build their spiritual lives.

1.2.2 Members are engaged; they are generous in their intentional commitment of time, treasure and talent to the work of the church.

1.2.3 We are connected to other UU churches and to the denomination, offering our strengths and skills to build a strong Unitarian Universalist movement.

1.3 Create Community  

1.3.1 The people of First Church have access to multiple, diverse opportunities to connect with one another in community.

1.3.2 First Church is an inclusive, supportive spiritual community that works as one church to advance our mission.

1.3.3 We are engaged with a variety of community partners to advance our mission throughout the greater Houston area.

1.4 Advance Justice  

1.4.1 First Church meets the unique needs of our campus neighborhoods with our social justice programs.

1.4.2 The people of First Church are motivated and fulfilled by their contributions to a variety of social justice initiatives.

1.4.3 We improve the lives of underserved people through our social justice programs.

1.5 Nourish Spirituality  

1.5.1 The people of First Church feel spiritually nourished through personal practice, worship, celebration and/or community liturgy.

1.5.2 First Church supports one another’s spiritual growth, even though our individual paths may differ.

1.5.3 Through our spiritual journeys, we are equipped to live out our Unitarian Universalist principles within and beyond the walls of First Church.

 

1.6 Priorities for 2018-19

1.6.1 Address – “One Church” identity (1.3.2), First Church brand (1.1.1) Membership, (numerical) growth (1.2.1), and supportive spiritual community (1.3.2, 1.5.2)

1.6.2 Measure – Member engagement (1.2.2), campus outreach (1.4.1) and denominational connections (1.2.3)

1.6.3 Enhance – Welcome (1.1.2), public values (1.1.3), community enrichment (1.3.1), and spiritual growth (1.5.1)

1.6.4 Maintain – Social justice (1.4.2, 1.4.3, 1.5.3) and partnership engagement (1.3.3)

1.7 Values:  

First Church values and affirms the inherent worth and dignity of each person. We value personal spiritual growth through lifelong education in this free religious tradition. We value active participation in the local, national and world communities. We value our connection to the interdependent web of life.
